On July 8, 2025 local time, the headquarters of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland, hosted a cultural feast. At the opening ceremony of the “Copyright in China” Thematic Exhibition, the art of Ruichang paper-cutting from Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province, captivated global attention with its unique charm. As a key intangible cultural heritage item promoted by Jiangxi, Ruichang paper-cutting, together with Jingdezhen ceramics and Wuyuan Huizhou inksticks, formed a brilliant calling card for Jiangxi’s cultural showcase.
According to the Jiangxi delegation, the exhibition showcased classic works of Ruichang paper-cutting, including “Prosperous Era of the Soaring Dragon”, “Pipa Pavilion”, and “Monkey Steals the Peach”. These pieces not only demonstrated exquisite traditional craftsmanship but also attracted attention for their distinctive copyright protection markings. Each exhibit was accompanied by bilingual Chinese–English descriptions, providing detailed information on the work’s creative background, artistic features, and copyright registration details.
“These paper-cutting works perfectly integrate traditional Chinese aesthetics with modern concepts of intellectual property protection,” said a visitor from France. He paused especially to admire “Prosperous Era of the Soaring Dragon”, praising its delicate lines and dynamic composition in glowing terms.
During the exhibition, the Ruichang paper-cutting section was constantly crowded with visitors. Intellectual property experts and cultural scholars from countries including Japan and Brazil expressed their admiration for this traditional craft. Liu Shiying, a representative inheritor of Ruichang paper-cutting, a national intangible cultural heritage item, remarked, “Copyright protection has breathed new vitality into traditional craftsmanship.” The veteran artisan continues to create to this day. Her representative work “Magpies and Plum Blossoms in Joyous Harmony” has not only been registered for copyright but has also been included in the digital archive of intangible cultural heritage in Jiujiang, serving as a teaching demonstration piece.
