Value-added of China’s Copyright Industry in 2018 Accounts for 7.37% of GDP

Recently, the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication has completed the survey report of The Economic Contribution of China’s Copyright Industry in 2018. According to the report, the industry added value of China’s copyright industry reached RMB 6.63 trillion in 2018, recording a year-on-year increase of 9.0% and accounted for 7.37% of the country’s GDP, up by 0.02 % over the previous year. The proportion of China’s copyright industry in national economy is rising steadily, and the scale of the industry is further expanded.


Since the 18th CPC National Congress, the National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC) and local copyright administrations have comprehensively implemented various decisions and arrangements of the CPC Central Committee, and adopted a wide array of legislative, policy and administrative tools to drive the fast growth of China’s copyright industry. From 2013 to 2018, the industry added value of China’s copyright industry increased from RMB 4.27 trillion to RMB 6.63 trillion, and the scale of the industry expanded by 55%. In view of the industry’s contribution to national economy, the proportion of China’s copyright industry in GDP increased from 7.27% in 2013 to 7.37% in 2018, up by 0.1 percentage points, recording a trend of yearly increase. As an important enabling force of innovation-driven development, the copyright industry plays an important role in China’s efforts to transform the pattern of economic growth and strongly supports China’s high-quality economic growth.


According to the report, the integrated development of new business forms, such as press and publication, radios, films and television, software, advertisements and design, is gathering speed, which accelerates the development of core copyright industries. In 2018, the industry added value of China’s core copyright industries exceeded RMB 4 trillion to arrive at RMB 4.17 trillion, up by 9.30% year on year, accounting for up to 63% of the overall copyright industry. The core copyright industries have come to play a more dominant role in the development of the copyright industry.


Employment in China’s copyright industry is continuously expanding, making positive contributions to stimulating employment growth and promoting export in foreign trade. In 2018, the number of urban employees in China’s copyright industry totaled 16,455,300, accounting for 9.53% of the total urban employees nationwide, up by 0.05 percentage points over 2017. The industry played an important role in boosting employment and maintaining social stability. China’s copyright industry enjoys consistently sound momentum in foreign trade. In 2018, the commodity export value from China’s copyright industry grew by 5.66% over 2017. Notably, as China continuously steps up the macro regulation of foreign trade in recent years, the commodity export value of the copyright industry has been growing for two consecutive years with a stable share of more than 11% in the country’s total.
