Under the guidance of the National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC), the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication (CAPP) recently finalized a research report entitled The Economic Contribution of China’s Copyright Industry in 2023. Research shows that in 2023, the copyright industry of China generated RMB 9.38 trillion in added value, growing 4.52% on a year-on-year basis and accounting for   7.44% of the country’s total GDP, an increase of 0.03 percentage point over the previous year. In particular, the core copyright industries created RMB 5.92 trillion in added value, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.71% and a share of 4.70% in the national GDP. Therefore, the copyright industry has gradually become a vital force in growing the national strength of China and rejuvenating the Chinese nation.


From 2019 to 2023, the added value of China’s copyright industry increased from RMB 7.32 trillion to RMB 9.38 trillion, and its share in the national GDP rose from 7.39% to 7.44%, up by 0.05 percentage points. Particularly, the added value of the core copyright industries (including publishing, recording, film, radio and television, software and other industries which derive their output value from copyright) grew from RMB 4.59 trillion to RMB 5.92 trillion, with its share in the national GDP rising from 4.63% to 4.70%. Industries such as software and IT services, digital publishing, radio and television, online audio-visual content, film, etc. developed quite well, greatly boosting the high-quality development of China’s copyright industry.  


Thanks to its steady growth, China’s copyright industry has played a positive role in maintaining the overall stability of the job market and promoting high-quality and sufficient employment. In 2023, the number of urban workers employed in the copyright industry stood at 15.7399 million, accounting for 9.62% of the total urban employment in China, up by 0.04 percentage point on a year-on-year basis. Moreover, the foreign trade across the copyright industry remained stable, which was of great significance to the stabilization of foreign trade and foreign investment. In the same year, the commodity export of China’s copyright industry was worth USD 414.613 billion, accounting for 12.27% of the country’s total commodity export, with the share exceeding 11% for years in a row.
